Consumer Reports Top 2010 Cars

March 5, 2010

Consumer Reports names six new models to its annual Top Picks car list for 2010. This year’s list is the most diverse group of Top Picks in over a decade with nine different car brands.

Honda and Toyota have had their spots in the Consumer Reports Top Picks list over the recent years. However, due to the growing competition this year, the Nissan Altima managed to surpass the Honda Accord as the Top Pick for Family Sedan. Which is the first time since 1998 that a Honda model was not selected.

Family Sedan: Nissan Altima. The Altima, ranging around $27K has been a Consumer Reports top-rated family sedan for a few years. With a new year, came a new Altima with improved gas mileage and electonic stability control (ESC) for the first time in all trim lines. A balance of comfort and performance, with the best fuel economy in its class of 26 mpg, secure handling and a comfortable ride makes Nissan Altima your 2010 Family Sedan.

Joining the Nissan Altima, is the Mazda5, Subaru Forester, Volkswagen GTI, Chevrolet Traverse and Silverado, Hyundai Elantra SE, Infiniti G37, Toyota Prius and Lexus LS460L as Consumer Report’ selections for best models of 2010 based on performance, reliability, and safety.

Consumer Reports’ automotive editor, Rick Paul states, “The diversity of this year’s Top Picks reflect how competitve the industry has become. Today’s car buyers have more choices than ever when looking for good all-around cars.”

All Consumer Report’ Top Picks must meet stringent road tests, reliability, and safety requirements. More than 50 individual tests are performed on every vehicle, including evaluations of braking, handling, comfort, convenience, safety, and fuel economy. Each model, this year provides standard ESC and curtain airbags. With more than 280 vehicles evaluated at the Auto Test Center, these are Consumer Reports best of the best.

Garage Door Opener Aplication for Your iPhone

March 5, 2010

As if the iPhone doesn’t have enough apps, now you can use it to open your garage door? Seems impossible, and without extra software, it is. “My Door Opener” is new software created to be used with the iPhone to open your garage door! With some inexpensive and easy to setup hardware you will be securely opening, closing or monitoring your garage door directly from the palm of your hand.

Features include:

• The “MyDoorOpener” controller is a standalone and free standing application. The application does not require any computer to be turned ON at home for the “MyDoorOpener” iPhone application to be able to control your garage door.

• The “MyDoorOpener” iPhone application works both over GSM and WiFi when you are in proximity/reach of your house’s WiFi access point.

• All exchanges between the “MyDoorOpener” iPhone application and controller are encrypted using a password scheme which changes for every single operation. No two control operations will get encrypted using the same key, preventing signal theft and unauthorized entry.

• If your garage door is equipped with an open/close alarm contact, the “MyDoorOpener” iPhone application can leverage this by offering visual feedback of your door’s current state. If you don’t have such sensor installed, the “MyDoorOpener” iPhone application will still be able to control the door, but will not provide this additional feedback information.

• iPhone app supports operating up to 3 doors in the ‘Elite’ version, and a single door in the regular version.

• More to come, such as garage door watchdog, Twitter & email notifications, and much more.
Instructions and details are at MyDoorOpener.com and with a little bit of building and downloading, you can replace that remote in your car with the iPhone that you’ll already have on you.
