In today’s world a GPS device has become a standard purchase for household vehicles. They’re great! The days of road maps, printing unclear directions off the internet, or just hoping landmarks and hand written directions can get you where you need to go are inconveniences of the past; for those who chose to own a GPS.  Something we don’t always think about is how much personal information we leave saved in these mini computers – for example, your full address saved under “Home” sitting right next to your garage door opener. In the thieves’ mind they’ve got an entrance way into your home, directions on how to get there and a quick $100 after they sell the electronic.  Here are a few tips on how to enjoy your GPS device but be still be smart about it:

1)      Take the GPS with you when you leave your vehicle – easy as that!

2)      Lock it up in your glove compartment or somewhere else secure in your vehicle.

3)      Do not leave the GPS on its mount and do not leave the mount up. The most reassuring thing that there is a GPS in a vehicle other than being able to physically see it, is to see a mount left on the window.

4)      Not only should you remove the mount, but wipe those smudges off your window the mount leaves!

5)      Do not leave your home address in the “Home” setting within the device. Also, If you keep your garage door opener in your vehicle, it would be a good idea to not use another address on your street as “Home”. They can easily identify which house on your street is yours by the click of a button! (The one to your garage door)

6)      Lastly, you could go as far as programming your local police station address into the “Home” setting as an extra warning to thieves. I’m sure you’d love to see their face as they pull up to a police station!

Stay safe, be smart, and be proactive! Hope these tips help keep you on your anti-theft toes! It’s surprising how many things in this busy world that seem common sense that we fail to think of without a reminder here or there. So keep your Garmin, Magellan, TomTom or whatever your GPS of choice is – YOUR best friend, not a thieves’!

It’s that time of year again! Tidewater Mopar Club and Hall Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram in Virginia Beach are holding their 5^th annual Summer Mopar Show this Saturday July 23^rd. This event is a must see for American made car lovers, or for people who just enjoy good food, the summer sun, and raising money for a great cause. There is a $20 registration fee for all participating cars in which all money is donated to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia.  There will be judging and prizes awarded for the top 20 cars in show, as well as Best of Show awards. Registration for participating vehicles will be at 9:00 am at Hall Chrysler Jeep Dodge in Virginia Beach (3152 Virginia Beach Blvd, Virginia Beach) and awards will be given at 3:00pm. Unfortunately, car sales professionals sell these fantastic new features as benefits, and new car owners mistakenly believe their new car cannot be damaged by sun exposure.  They are sadly mistaken.  Due to the ozone layer depletion in our atmosphere, UV radiation strength is increasing.

Protecting your vehicle from UV radiation damage continues to be a necessary maintenance.  Here’s my how-to list for keeping your car sun damage free for 10 or more years:

• Use a synthetic paint sealant product on your car several times each year.  No product on the market retains UV protection effectiveness more than 2-3 months.

• Use a vinyl and rubber protectant with UV inhibitors on all exterior vinyl and rubber twice a month.

• Treat cloth upholstery and carpet with a UV and stain blocker treatment once a year.

• Treat vinyl, plastic and leather upholstery every two months.

• Tint the rear and passenger side windows.

• Use a sun shield in your windshield when parked outside.

• Cover your car when parked outside for extended periods.

When these simple steps are taken, your vehicle’s appearance has a chance of remaining in excellent condition for ten or more years.  If you take no precautions, your car’s appearance will noticeably deteriorate in less than five years.”

The World Car Awards jurors observed that, “The Leaf is the gateway to a brave new electric world from Nissan. This 5-seater, 5-door hatchback is the world’s first, purpose-built, mass-produced electric car. It has a range of over 100 miles on a full charge claims Nissan, takes around 8 hours to recharge using 220-240V power supply and produces zero tailpipe emissions. Its low center of gravity produced sharp turn-in with almost no body roll and no understeer. The good news? It feels just like a normal car, only quieter.”

The World Car of the Year competition was launched in 2004, with winners chosen by a panel of automotive journalists from Asia, Europe and North America.

Nissan LEAF is available in Japan, the United States and select European markets and will be released in other global markets in 2012. The vehicle is currently built at Nissan’s Oppama, Japan plant. It also will be manufactured at the company’s Smyrna, Tenn., plant in the United States in late 2012 and at Nissan’s Sunderland plant in the United Kingdom by early 2013.
