Sure, Passat lovers are rejoicing over the reinstating of a Volkswagen classic. So what’s new? How about a more spacious cabin for starters. The 2012 VW Passat has the best in-class legroom but keeps the luxurious interior and affordable German engineering that car shoppers expect from Volkswagen. One of the most noteworthy aspects is that this mid-size sedan, which debuted at the 2011 North American International Auto Show, will be built in America at VW’s new Chattanooga assembly plant.

Some of the new features include a TDI Clean Diesel engine option, an Integrated Crash Response System (ICRS), available remote start, and on certain models the available Fender Premium Audio System consisting of nine speakers (including subwoofer), among other great built-in technology.

After weeks of selling raffle tickets for the Fiat 500, the build up had reached the exciting day at last. The winner was finally drawn last Friday June 17th, 2011 at Goucher College’s Relay for Life event. MileOne was on hand with the car on display, selling last minute tickets and handing out information about the car. There was even a mini corn-hole tournament! As part of the opening ceremonies, a survivor shared her moving story of survival. MileOne then spoke about their support of ACS and that we were moments away from raffling off a Fiat 500. The cancer survivor then drew the winning ticket out of hundreds piled in the trunk of the Fiat. Congratulations to Edith Sue Lawson-Smith who was the grand prize winner!!! MileOne was able to raise $61,000 from the ticket sales where 100% of proceeds were donated to the American Cancer Society.

There has been a lot of buzz about the Chevy Cruze in recent months, but General Motors announced yesterday that the highly anticipated compact cars are rolling off the assembly line in Lordstown, Ohio.

“Our new body shop is among the best in the world. Our team is inspired and energized by the build of the Cruze. It’s a safe and reliable compact car with that mid-size experience,” Dave Green, president of UAW Local 1714 at the Lordstown Metal Center said in a press release.

The Lordstown Complex has been in operation since 1966 and according to GM, the plant has produced more than 14 million vehicles. A team of about 4,500 have been building the new Chevy Cruze cars. The vehicles will be in U.S. and Canadian showrooms next week.

The Cruze has a starting price of $16,995. And although it’s a compact, the Cruze is a leader in safety with 10 airbags, StabiliTrak electronic stability control with rollover sensing, traction control, antilock brakes and collapsible pedal system. All cars include OnStar with Automatic Crash Response.

“We have been working hard toward this goal for the past two years,” said UAW Local 1112 President Jim Graham. “We have a premium small car that we are proud to build and eager to get into the dealerships.”

Yesterday in Times Square Volkswagen revealed the all new 2011 Jetta.  The newly updated Jetta is bigger and cheaper. The event featured live billboards along with the car and on the hood was  singer Katy Perry. She got the crowd going with her hits I Kissed A Girl (and I liked it) and California Gurls.

The event was also a coming out party for the brand. VW is huge worldwide, but has seemed unable to break out of a tiny niche of loyal buyers in the U.S. car market. Volkswagen ranked eighth in U.S. sales last month and has a U.S. market share of about 3.1% for the first five months of the year, up from 2.8% for the same period last year.

There’s been a long standing tradition of automakers giving cars to local police departments in whatever areas they have facilities in and Volkswagen is no different.  Volkswagen of America has moved its headquarters from Michigan to Virginia and the Herndon police department has received a pair of new Passats – a modified sedan and wagon for use by the local authorities.

The standard 2.0-liter TSI (turbocharged and direct injected) inline-four has been beefed up for its new role, raising output from 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet to 250 hp and 299 lb-ft. The four-cylinder police vehicles get the larger brakes from the 3.6-liter V6 versions, as well as 18-inch wheels with Pirelli performance tires. FMS Automotive built special enclosures for the communications equipment to make it look like a standard Passat. Volkswagen has not given any indication whether it plans to get into the regular police vehicle market when the new U.S.-built Passat arrives next year.
