BMW develops microNavigation

Many people rely on their in-dash navigation system for help when finding a destination in an unfamiliar area. Heading off to a new place can be confusing enough just to get there, but now where do you park? Current navigation systems, both in-dash and hand-held types, have limited databases of such detailed information.

To take care of this issue, BMW is developing a microNavigation system called Pathfinder to supplement the data stored onboard the car. Pathfinder allows you to download more detailed information about your destination in the form of a MicroMap to a memory card before you leave the house. When the card is inserted into the car, the data is added to the built-in navigation information. The more detailed information can even work with a camera used for lane departure warning to tell the driver which lane they should be in to catch ramps and entries to highways or parking structures.

Once the car is parked, the data can be transferred to a smartphone or other mobile device for the final leg of the trip. The phone can guide you directly to your destination and in can even remember where you parked. When more vehicles are offered with their own mobile data connections, this data could even be downloaded directly straight to the car on the fly. All of this will require the creation of far more detailed maps than exist today; also it’s not clear if current map data providers will produce these microMaps. Google is incorporating much of this information from its search index, however, its recent deals with Ford and General Motors’ OnStar, it could soon be the default provider for every automaker.

Forget the Porsche 911: if what you want is to be noticed, buy a 2008 BMW Z4 coupe. It got more attention around Ann Arbor than almost any other car I’ve driven this spring and summer. They’re just so rare. People don’t quite know what to make of it. I, for one, really like the Z4 coupe’s looks.

This V-10 powertrain is certainly more tractable and enjoyable to drive with the six-speed manual than with the SMG transmission that originally was the sole offering in the M5 sedan. A car with 500 horsepower and ten cylinders under the hood has an undeniable allure, but there’s still something somewhat strange, somewhat un-BMW-like, about this M6 coupe. It’s not a sport coupe, really, since it weighs so much and is so big. Yet it doesn’t have the grace of a true luxury coupe, either, like the Mercedes-Benz CL. I don’t quite know what to make of it.

Forty-two thousand dollars is a lot of money for a 1-series BMW, especially a 128i. Plus, this convertible version isn’t as good looking or as sharp to drive as the 250-pound-lighter 128i coupe. But those buyers that want a convertible will flock to this car. If you look at the base price, $33,875 buys you a nice BMW softtop. Most of the people who purchase this car won’t care that it handles worse than the coupe; they’ll be too busy enjoying the sunshine. They may not even notice the slightly choppy ride that carries over from the coupe into the convertible. Some slight cowl shake also comes along for the ride, and it’s not helped by the ride quality. I still love this normally aspirated in-line six, but the additional weight of the convertible does dull its grunt at lower rpm. Overall, I much prefer a lightly optioned 128i coupe.

The phrase ‘concept car’ once indicated a vehicle was a showcase of pie-in-the-sky technologies. Now, it’s relegated to pre-production vehicles gussied up with subtle trim changes before their official introduction. Such is the case with the BMW X1 Concept – though it’s appearing at the Paris motor show as a show car, it’s a fairly unobstructed look at the upcoming X1 crossover.
