Does your car reflect your viewing choice?

A recent article in USA Today compared car owners with their late-night TV show of choice.  They teamed up and created a poll with Penn Schoen Berland, market research and consulting firm, to showcase the demographics of viewers and their cars.

According to the results of the poll fans of Conan O’Brien are most likely to be between the ages of 18 and 34 year old and drive Volkswagens.  Those who prefer to watch Jay Leno are typically age 45 or older and lean toward domestics, especially Pontiac and Chevrolets.

Change the channel to watch David Letterman and you are likely somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 to 44 years old, and cruising around in a Toyota.  Lastly, people who prefer to get their news and entertainment from Jon Stewart fall between the ages of 35-54 and favor GMC trucks.

Techies Transportation

30Nov

When it comes to technology, you’re either an “early adopter” or you’re a “laggard”. Even among early adopters, there are those that stand out, the “innovators,” as marketers call them. This category includes people willing to stand in line all night in a driving rain outside an Apple store to get an iPad at the first moment of its market launch.

So, what do these kinds of people drive? According to Translogic.com the quick answer is a Chevy Camaro, Kia Soul or Ford Flex. The cars most popular with techies are based on a survey of 140,000 consumers over the last two years. Six other vehicles on the list are certainly no surprise: Acura TL, Infiniti G, Lexus IS, the Hyundai Genesis sedan, and the Porshe Cayenne. Innovators and early adopters are more likely to choose a luxury car, Translogic.com concludes.

Translogic.com used the 2010 Acura TL as an example. At a base price of $35,105, it offers Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, a USB port and an iPod interface as standard features. Options like a 10-speaker audio system that plays audiophile DVD-Audio discs, a navigation system with voice recognition, and a rear-view camera take it to the next level.

Muscle is the Camaro’s chief innovation, serving up 300 hp from its direct injection V6 or 426 hp from its V8. The Ford Flex in part made the list thanks to its edgy exterior styling. According to Translogic.com, “Innovators are people who are more likely to take risks and they will definitely gravitate to vehicles with bolder and more polarizing styling.”

What these folks have in common is a desire to try out new things and share their experiences with their peers. So, just how adventurous or “techie” are you when it comes to your form of transportation?

Top Cars for Technology Innovators:

1. Chevrolet Camaro

2. Kia Soul

3. Ford Flex

4. Hyundai Genesis Sedan

5. Porsche Cayenne

6. Ford F-Series pickup

7. Acura TL

8. Infiniti G sedan

9. Volkswagen CC

10. Nissan Maxima

50 years ago, US insurers organized the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.   The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is an independent, nonprofit, scientific, and educational organization dedicated to reducing the losses — deaths, injuries, and property damage — from crashes on the nation’s highways

Over these 50 years car crashworthiness has improved. Demonstrating this improvement a crash test was conducted between a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air and a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. In a real-world collision similar to this test, occupants of the new model would fare much better than in the vintage Chevy.

“It was night and day, the difference in occupant protection,” says Institute president Adrian Lund. “What this test shows is that automakers don’t build cars like they used to. They build them better.”

The crash test was conducted at an event to celebrate the contributions of auto insurers to highway safety progress over 50 years. Beginning with the Institute’s 1959 founding, insurers have maintained the resolve, articulated in the 1950s, to “conduct, sponsor, and encourage programs designed to aid in the conservation and preservation of life and property from the hazards of highway accidents.”

2011 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD LTZ

General Motors has recently announced the new hauling capacities for the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD pickups. The 2011 model trucks can now pull up to 21,700 pounds in fifth-wheel configuration. Also they now can lug around 6,635 pounds worth of payload, making them the new best-in class champions. Traditional tow rating sits at 17,000 pounds. To hit these new towing capabilities GM says that it thoroughly tested the trucks’ systems, including the engine, transmission and brakes at the new gross combined vehicle weight and found that the trucks could handle a much heftier load.

The Silverado HD and the Sierra HD both now come with tougher bed rails. GM specified a new high-strength steel that can handle more compared to last year’s pieces. The trucks are beating the closest competitor, the 2011 Ford F-350, by 1,000 pounds on the conventional towing front and a more modest 100 pounds under fifth-wheel conditions.

Cruze into Chevy

11May

The electric car with a gasoline-fueled generator — scheduled to arrive at the end of 2010 — holds the automotive record for the longest launch in history. But the Volt will not have nearly the immediate impact on the environment or Chevrolet’s bottom line as the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze will.

And, after a first drive of the car’s different powertrains, it looks like the people at Chevy are just as serious about this compact as they are about the Volt.

Spacious and comfortable

The new Cruze interior is spacious and comfortable. It’s bigger than a typical compact and it feels that way. The drive was designed to get a feel for Chevy’s new little Ecotec engines and the car’s ride. When the Cruze arrives, it will come with either a 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine or a 1.4-liter turbocharged I-4.

The smaller of the two is designed to provide maximum mileage and Chevy promises 40 while still producing 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. (Chevy has not announced the city mileage for the Cruze Eco; however, some of its press material stated a city mileage of 27 mpg, though engineers said that number could improve.) miles per gallon. The engine feels very competent while accelerating or cruising at highway speeds. The 1.8-liter engine, which is the base engine for the Cruze, is nearly as good. It creates 136 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque.

Confident, quick and quiet

No matter which engine the Cruze comes with, it will have a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Both were very responsive, never rushing to sixth gear in hopes of stretching out a few more feet with a gallon of gas. And while engineers will continue to tinker with the calibrations, its overall feel was confident, quick and quiet. Chevy even has a patent to show for its work on the rear suspensions, which it calls a Z link. This allows the rear axle to react independently to each wheel input. The car, while not a racer, can certainly handle tight cornering. Even the rack-mounted electric power steering provided nice resistance and a good return to center.

All of these suspension improvements become especially noticeable when you realize how quiet the car is on the road. The 17-inch wheels on the Eco Cruze (they are the same wheels used on the Volt) do allow more road noise into the cabin than the bigger 18-inch wheels, but, in both cases, the noise levels are very low. It’s easy to hold a conversation with someone in the second row without ever raising your voice.

In comparisons with the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, the Cruze was considerably quieter on the same route.

Luxury technology

The Cruze also uses luxury car technology to quiet the ride of this common man compact. Things like a laminated windshield, acoustic material in the headliner, well-sealed doors and hydraulic engine mounts all chip away at those little things that add noise inside the cabin. The Eco model  includes air shutters that can open or close part of the grille to improve the car’s aerodynamics. It also has a lighter carpet throughout the cabin.

One of the battles all compact cars face is the safety concerns, a worry for many consumers. The Cruze is engineered for a five-star rating, though it has not been tested. Overseas, where it’s already sold, the Cruze has achieved a top safety rating on three continents. The U.S. model will include 10 standard airbags, including front-seat knee bags and second-row side air bags. Like many other compacts, a lot of thought and design has been placed on channeling energy around the cabin during an accident and to make the vehicle as safe as possible.

The modern compact customer expects Bluetooth, USB connections, navigation screens and leather. The chunky styling of the Cruze that gives it a much more muscular look than some of the competition. The lines are crisp and distinct and that should hold up well through the years.

Inside and out, this car shows how serious Chevy has become with its compact. The Volt may be Mr. Right for the future, but the Cruze is Mr. Right Now.

Look for the Cruze to come out in 2011 at your Hall Chevrolet, Western Branch dealership.

Even in markets that are new to Chevy, it has been creating an emotional appeal for the brand.”

Heroes At Home 2010

24Mar

Being in the military sure isn’t easy. However, being a military spouse can be just as hard. Our military spouses are heroes whom maintain the home-front during long deployments, selflessly volunteering in their communities, and provide moral support for their loved ones serving at home and in harms way. Most of these ‘At Home Heroes’ hold down full time jobs and raise families. While the service member is rewarded for superior job performance with medals, promotions and ceremonies, the military spouse generally only receives a “thank you” from their significant other.

TIMES ARE CHANGING… Hall Chevrolet Western Branch is sponsoring the 2010 Military Spouse of the Year. The honorary spouse will be chosen from nominees across all branches of the military throughout Hampton Roads.

Since 2005, the Flagship Military Newspaper launched Heroes at Home: The Military Spouse Awards. It is time again to celebrate the sixth year of this prestigious event. The Hampton Roads community will come together to recognize spouses of service members from the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Navy and Marine Corps. The Military Spouse Awards give the military and civilian communities an opportunity to say “thank you” and to recognize our military spouses for the challenges they overcome every day. This event is the only regional event in the country that honors military spouses from all branches of the Armed Services.

The Heroes at Home event has even captured the attention of the White House. The 2007 and 2008 finalists were all invited to a reception at the White House honoring military spouses and the 2007 Spouse of the Year, Linda Port, also received the President’s Volunteer Service Award. The 2009 Spouse of the Year, Michelle Galvez, seen in the image to the left, was chosen to meet with Michelle Obama when she visited Tidewater this past July. For more information on Michelle Galvez and her voluntary acts please visit: www.flagshipnews.com/articles/2010/03/23/heroes_at_home/spouse_awards/spouseawards01.txt.

A judging panel consisting of members of the Hampton Roads business community as well as the Armed Services will review the nominations and select 10 finalist, one of whom will be named the 2010 Military Spouse of the Year. All nominees will be honored at a luncheon and formal awards ceremony on May 6, 2010. The finalists and ‘Spouse of the Year’ will be announced at this luncheon.

“I’m excited about heading back to Las Vegas. We had a good run in Fontana and I am itching to get the No. 36 Kim Kardashian Fragrance Chevy out on the track this weekend. Racing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is tough, but I have had some good runs here and I hope to follow up last week’s effort with another nice performance…” Mike Bliss explains.

Kim Kardashian made an appearance before the Motor Speedway race at Sin City’s Sephora in the Venetian’s Grand Canal Shoppes while the No. 36  Chevy “Kim Kar” was parked outside.

Kardashian on her Chevy partnership stated, “I’m really looking forward to this partnership with Tommy Baldwin Racing and the opportunity to experience the exciting world of NASCAR up close.
