2008 Jeep Renegade Concept
October 10, 2008

Jeep gives us a look at the Wrangler of the future. It features an Earth-friendly powertrain, but can still hold its own in the tough stuff.
Jeep’s Renegade concept shows how the Wrangler could be re-invented for the 21st century. The Renegade is about the length of a Wrangler, but has a six-inch longer wheelbase. It’s off-road capable, with four-wheel drive, locking differentials, and a low range. But this concept’s powertrain breaks dramatically with Wrangler orthodoxy.

2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited – Four Seasons Wrap-up
October 10, 2008

Too crude for some, too refined for others, but fun for almost everybody.
I first sampled the new Jeep Wrangler two years ago in South Luangwa National Park in sub-Saharan Africa. The romanticized safari setting most definitely played to the vehicle’s off-road strengths while neatly sidestepping its on-road weaknesses. During two days of very difficult off-road adventures through inspiring Zambian landscapes, the new Wrangler proved to be as unshakable in the rough stuff as anyone could expect a production-spec four-by-four to be, despite the fact that it is considerably wider and longer than its predecessor. Even the all-new Wrangler Unlimited, the first-ever four-door Wrangler, easily tackled the harsh African terrain.

Lifted and customized, the Jeep Wrangler AllAccess is a SEMA show car wearing custom Surf Blue paint.
This SEMA show queen has been prettied up with new upholstery (by Chrysler’s color and trim studio), custom “surf blue” paint, and 17-inch wheels from American Expedition Vehicles. It sits high with a four-inch lift kit and also sports body-color exterior bits and Mopar bumpers and rock rails.

2007 Jeep Wrangler JT
October 10, 2008

The Wrangler JT is a show car for SEMA, but a version of this truck is built for the U.S. military. The difference is that the JT has an open pickup bed.
Although the Wrangler JT is being shown at SEMA, it actually was finished several months early, so the JT had its coming out party on the Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah – fitting for such an off-road-ready vehicle.

2008 Jeep Liberty
October 10, 2008

Hey, did you see the slick new sunroof? It can still hold its own off-road and pull a trailer. And it has a new sunroof.
During the launch of the new Liberty, we couldn’t stop wondering how many times Jeep executives were going to mention the Liberty’s new sky-slider full-length sunroof. Yes, it’s cool, and yes, it’s a unique selling feature, but after driving the new Liberty, it’s going to take more than a trick sunroof to sell us on this vehicle. From its archaic four-speed automatic and coarse V-6 to its dead steering and down-market interior plastics, it is clear that the Liberty is far off the pace in its segment. For 2008, the Liberty does burnish its already impressive off-road abilities, and it can still tow up to 5000 pounds. It also gets a new, boxier design in an attempt to win back Cherokee devotees who were so distraught when their angular icon was dropped in 2001. The Liberty also is now available with a navigation system, a media hard drive, rear parking sensors, and the aforementioned canvas sunroof. Still, we can’t see living with the Liberty’s poor on-road dynamics, heavy thirst for fuel, and low-rent interior–unless you really need a small SUV that can both crawl over rocks and haul a trailer.

2004 Jeep Treo Concept
October 10, 2008

Jeep was the only U.S. manufacturer to bring a concept car to Tokyo–the Treo. Designed at Chrysler’s advanced design studio in California, the Treo is described by studio chief Freeman Thomas as “an all-weather ATV” and a look at where Jeep might be 10-15 years into the future.
